Guy Mintus is an Israeli-born pianist, composer, vocalist, bandleader, and improviser whose work moves fluidly between classical music, jazz, and musical traditions from around the world. Whether performing solo, leading his own trio, or appearing with orchestras, Mintus transforms the concert stage into a space where spontaneity, virtuosity, humor, groove, and deep emotional communication coexist naturally.
His music brings together sources that are rarely heard in the same context. Through original compositions and improvisation-infused reinterpretations, he draws connections between Beethoven and Gershwin, Middle Eastern maqam, South Indian rhythms, and contemporary jazz. The New York Times wrote that Mintus “pours together a mixed brew of influences with ebullient grace that you’d think they all originated in the very same place.”
As a composer and soloist, Mintus has appeared with orchestras including the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra, the Vienna Volksoper Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Revolution Orchestra, and the Raanana Symphonette. His orchestral work includes original concert pieces and piano concertos, as well as reinterpretations of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 9, 20, and 21. In these projects, improvisation is built into the relationship between soloist, ensemble, and score rather than added as a separate feature.
A Yamaha Artist, Mintus has performed at venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Teatro Massimo, the Romanian Athenaeum, Konzerthaus Dortmund, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Ruhr Piano Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz à Juan, Winter Jazzfest, Joe’s Pub, Duc des Lombards, and the Israeli Opera. His touring has taken him across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. He is the recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award, and the Audience Prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival Piano Competition.
Mintus leads the Guy Mintus Trio with bassist Oren Hardy and drummer Yonatan Rosen. Founded in 2016, the trio is known for performances in which detailed arrangements can open into collective improvisation, rhythmic play, and spontaneous interaction.
The trio’s recordings include Connecting the Dots, A Home in Between, and A Gershwin Playground. A Home in Between was selected as an Editor’s Pick by DownBeat. A Gershwin Playground, released by ENJA Records, is devoted to the music of George Gershwin. Writing about the album, DownBeat noted that Mintus’ “bold reimaginings of each track take listeners on a rocket ride to heights where they can see these tunes as if for the first time.”
Alongside his performing and composing work, Mintus teaches workshops, masterclasses, and artist residencies. He has worked at institutions including UCLA, Seoul National University, the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, and the Philippos Nakas Conservatory in Athens, as well as in refugee camps and underserved communities.
Mintus also co-created Can You Tell the Difference? with filmmaker Jakub Cermaque, who filmed and edited the project. Part documentary and part musical experiment, the short film was made with over 100 children from Jewish, Muslim, and Christian backgrounds.
