ABOUT

Jovan J. Dawkins is a Grammy Award-winning drummer, musician, composer, music producer, and music publisher who has spent more than two decades building a career across the music and entertainment industries. Originally from Tacoma, Washington, Jovan’s relationship with music started at a very young age. He grew up around gospel music and musicians, and the drums quickly became his first real musical language. By age 10, he was already playing regularly in church, developing the feel, pocket, timing, and musical instincts that would become a major part of his professional career.

His musical growth continued in middle school, where he began learning how to read music and was introduced to arranging, orchestral music, and composition. Before long, he did more than play drums. He was being given opportunities to compose and arrange music for his school band and even conduct during performances. Looking back, those experiences were an early indication that his future in music would extend well beyond the drum kit.

Although Tacoma is home, Los Angeles has been at the center of Jovan’s professional career from the beginning. As a teenager, he began traveling from Washington to Los Angeles as opportunities for drumming, recording sessions, and other professional music work became available. What started as back-and-forth trips eventually grew into a Los Angeles-based career, allowing him to build relationships and establish himself in the recording and entertainment industry.

Over the years, Jovan’s work has taken him from the drum kit to the producer’s chair and into songwriting, composing, publishing, and other areas of the music business. Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to work in the studio and live as a drummer, musician, producer, composer, and creative collaborator with artists including Jordin Sparks, Wiz Khalifa, Kurupt, Jamie Foxx, Shanice Wilson, Faith Evans, Snoop Dogg, TLC, Chris Brown, H.E.R., Cardi B, Tank, Tyrese, and Travis Barker.

Being a drummer has always played an important role in the way Jovan approaches music. Whether he is producing a record, writing, arranging, or composing, his sense of rhythm and understanding of how musicians interact with one another remain at the foundation of his creative process. His career has allowed him to work across R&B, hip-hop, gospel, pop, and other styles without losing the musical foundation that began behind the drums.

Jovan’s work has also expanded into film, television, and gaming. As a composer and producer, his music has been connected to projects including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Grey’s Anatomy, Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, NBA 2K, and Fortnite. Working in visual media has given him another outlet for his musicianship and has allowed him to bring together his background as a drummer, producer, arranger, and composer.

Away from the stage, Jovan has built an equally important career on the business side of music. As a music publisher, producer, songwriter, studio owner, and entertainment executive, he has developed an understanding of the industry that reaches from creating music in the studio to publishing, ownership, and the business behind the records.

Today, Jovan remains based in Los Angeles and continues to work as a drummer, producer, composer, publisher, and music executive. Even with the different directions his career has taken, the drums have always remained an important part of who he is as a musician.

For Jovan, being a Yamaha Drums artist is a natural extension of a journey that started behind a drum kit as a kid in Tacoma and grew into a lifelong career in music. Whether he is playing live, working in a recording session, producing a record, or composing for film and television, the foundation remains the same: musicianship, feel, creativity, and always serving the music.
