ABOUT

Andrew K Szypula is a percussionist and educator living and working in the thriving New Orleans music industry scene. Andrew currently serves as Assistant Director of Bands at Tulane University where he oversees “The Sound of Uptown” Marching Band, the Green Wave Brass Band, and other ensembles that perform for the Greater New Orleans community over 180 times a year.

Andrew has produced and designed shows for clients such as ESPN SportsCenter, Super Bowl LIX, Super Bowl XLVIII, Uber, American Idol, World Expo 2020, NCAA Final Four, Temple University, Kutztown University, Villanova University, Blue Devils Performing Arts, and countless other scholastic and professional performance organizations. In 2020, Andrew was signed to Extreme Music as a composer on a collection of high-energy drumline cues for film and media titled Bang to Rights produced by The Blue Devils.

Andrew keeps an active performance schedule, appearing regularly with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and other symphonic ensembles in the Greater New Orleans area. He can be heard on the drum set with The New Orleans Johnnys, Whisper Party!, and has worked with the likes of Jon Cleary, George Porter, Jr., Caren Green, Bob Weir, Jay Weigel, HBO, and more. He is also active in the local musical theater scene, having performed for productions at Tulane University Summer Lyric Theater, New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, and Jefferson Performing Arts Society.

Andrew has been performing on Yamaha instruments for his entire career and is proud to be a Yamaha Performing Artist. He is also a member of the Vic Firth, Zildjian, and Remo Educational Artist Teams, Percussive Arts Society, College Band Directors National Association, and the Beetle Percussion Artist Family. A native of the Philadelphia region, Andrew completed undergraduate studies at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and earned a master’s degree in percussion performance from Temple University under the tutelage of Alan Abel.
