Matthew Haislip enjoys a varied career as a hornist, teacher, and composer. He currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Horn at Mississippi State University and performs as Principal Horn of the Starkville Symphony, Second Horn of the North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Fourth Horn of the Meridian Symphony Orchestra, and Fourth Horn in the Missouri Symphony Orchestra’s summer Firefly Music Festival. He serves the International Horn Society as Mississippi Area Representative and as editor of the Media Reviews in The Horn Call, the society’s journal. He was previously a horn instructor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for fifteen years and has served on the faculties of Washburn University, Calvary University, McMurry University, and Hardin-Simmons University. He is a founding member of Quintasonic Brass, with whom he has performed as a featured guest artist at the Velikogorički Brass Festival in Zagreb, Croatia and at such universities as the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music, University of Louisville, and Western Illinois University. He has served as Co-Principal Horn of the Midland-Odessa Symphony (TX), Assistant Principal/Utility Horn of the Kentucky Symphony, and Principal Horn of the Kansas City Civic Orchestra and has performed as a substitute or extra hornist with such ensembles as Mannheim Steamroller, Cincinnati Opera, Opera Naples (FL), Omaha Symphony Orchestra, Billings Symphony Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Chattanooga Symphony, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Abilene Opera, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, and South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, among others. Presentations and performances include the International Horn Symposium, International Music By Women Festival, Mississippi Bandmasters Association Clinic, Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop, The Ohio State University, University of Arkansas, West Virginia University, Western Kentucky University, University of Alabama, and the White Lake Chamber Music Festival. He has performed as a soloist with the Mississippi State University Wind Ensemble, Angelo State University Wind Ensemble, Starkville High School Band, and Wills Point High School Band (TX). He has recorded several hundred new concert band pieces as principal and section horn for 150 streaming services with the Excelcia Wind Band for Excelcia Music Publishing. Haislip’s book, Dueling Fundamentals for Two Horns, is published by Mountain Peak Music and his compositions are published by WaveFront Music and the Online Music Sales of the International Horn Society and have been performed at such institutions as the Southwest Horn Workshop, Mid-South Horn Workshop, Southeast Horn Workshop, University of Alberta, Northern Illinois University, University of Akron, Western Carolina University, University of Denver, and James Madison University. He led the successful composition consortium for Anthony Plog’s Horn Sonata and performed the world premiere in 2023. His articles and/or reviews have been published by the International Horn Society, Historic Brass Society, British Horn Society, the National Band Association, and The Bandworld. He holds degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and Texas A&M University-Commerce. His teachers include Martin Hackleman, Randy Gardner, Michael Morrow, Elizabeth Freimuth, Thomas Sherwood, and Duane Dugger.
