Born and raised in Inglewood, CA, Chris Johnson has become one of the most sought-after trombonists in Los Angeles and beyond. Known for his versatility as a studio musician, horn arranger, and contractor, Chris has built an international career performing and recording with some of the biggest names in music.
A graduate of Inglewood High School, Chris earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, followed by a master’s degree in jazz studies from Northern Illinois University. Along the way, he studied with legends such as Clark Terry, Ronald Carter, Tom Garling, and Wycliffe Gordon—mentors who helped shape his distinctive artistry and passion for the trombone.
Chris’ resume reads like a who’s-who of modern music. He has toured and recorded with Beyoncé, Jay Z, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dr. Dre, Ed Sheeran, Raphael Saadiq, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Jamie Foxx, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, H.E.R., Jennifer Hudson, and many more. His sound has been featured on some of the world’s biggest stages, from the Renaissance World Tour and Cowboy Carter Tour with Beyoncé, to global television events including The Grammys, The Oscars, The American Music Awards, The Voice, and American Idol.
His work also extends into film, television, and commercial projects, with credits in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, DC’s Black Adam, Homecoming, Black is King, NFL Honors, Ellen, and national commercials for Popeyes, Anheuser Busch, Caesar’s Sportsbook, and others.
Beyond the spotlight, Chris is passionate about education. He teaches private lessons, clinics, and master classes, inspiring the next generation of musicians with the same spark that first drew him to the trombone in middle school. He also leads The Black Fist Brass Band, a dynamic ensemble that brings the energy of brass music to festivals, clubs, and private events nationwide.
