Allie Lawn is an American cellist, songwriter, and performer best known for her tenure as the cellist of the indie rock band Ra Ra Riot. Drawing from her classical training, Lawn helped define the band’s distinctive fusion of indie rock and chamber-pop textures. Her expressive cello lines became a hallmark of Ra Ra Riot’s sound, featured prominently on the acclaimed albums The Rhumb Line (2008) and The Orchard (2010). During her years with the group, Lawn pushed the boundaries of what the cello could do in a rock ensemble — treating it not as a background instrument, but as a melodic and emotional voice equal to guitars and vocals. Her onstage energy, combined with her inventive approach to arrangement and tone, helped inspire a wave of chamber-pop and orchestral indie acts that followed in the late 2000s.
Today, Lawn has found a fresh artistic home in Nashville’s country music scene, where she performs and records with Brett Young and other artists across the country and genres. By bringing the cello into this traditionally guitar-driven world, she is helping to introduce a new sonic dimension to country music — weaving the instrument’s warmth, lyrical phrasing, and emotional depth into both live performances and studio productions.
As a session musician, songwriter, and arranger, Lawn continues to explore the intersection of classical technique, pop sensibility, and emotion. With a background rooted in precision and experimentation, Lawn’s artistry bridges genres and generations, proving that the cello can speak fluently in any musical language.
