Flutist Carla Copeland-Burns enjoys a vibrant career based in North Carolina as both performer and teacher.
Praised for her flexibility and artistry across genres, she is Principal flute for the North Carolina Opera and Salisbury Symphony, Piccolo for the Greensboro Symphony, and a frequent performer with the North Carolina Symphony and the Carolina Ballet. Chamber groups include Flute4, Mallarmé Music, and the composer-performer collective Blue Mountain Forecast. Carla is especially committed to new music, frequently collaborating on commissions and premiere performances. Dr. Copeland-Burns teaches flute and Chamber Music at Duke University, Meredith College, and through her home studio. She previously served as Instructor of Flute at Radford University and has also been on the faculties of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Mars Hill College, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department. Guest artist-teacher engagements have taken her throughout the U.S. and to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and to several National Flute Association conventions and International Double Reed Society conferences. Recently she presented a masterclass and performed a program of new music with her Duke University studio at the Hanyang International New Music Festival in South Korea. Summer festival appearances include the New England Music Camp, Eastern Music Festival, and the InterHarmony and Clazz International Music Festivals in Tuscany Italy. Her students now thrive as educators, therapists, administrators, scientists, and performers worldwide. Carla Copeland-Burns holds degrees from Florida State University, New England Conservatory, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
