Dave Camwell

ABOUT

Praised by Fanfare Magazine (May/June 2025) for his “evident virtuosity to be relished,” saxophonist Dr. Dave Camwell has earned international acclaim for his technique, expressive range, and artistry in both classical and jazz styles. He has been featured as a soloist in evening concerts at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conferences in 2012 and 2023—one of few artists to appear in both genres.

Since 2021, Camwell has partnered with Czech saxophonist Kateřina Pavlíková in the Covert Ensemble, creating virtuosic and compelling new works for two saxophones. Their artistry has been recognized with Second Prize in the American Prize for Chamber Music Performance (October 2024) and finalist status for the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music (December 2024). In 2025, the ensemble released a Dolby Atmos recording of Bach’s Chaconne in D Minor, a reimagined narrative inspired by the tempestuous relationship between Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

Camwell serves as Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at Troy University in Alabama, and is a Yamaha, D’Addario, SCV, and Key Leaves Performing Artist. His over thirty publications are available through Jeanne, Universal Edition, Dorn, and UNC Jazz Press. A passionate advocate for new music, he has participated in numerous commissioning projects and personally led consortiums resulting in works by Marc Mellits, Jenni Brandon, Devanii, Robert W. Smith, Martin Hybler, and David DeBoor Canfield.
