ABOUT

Douglas DeVries is Acting Associate Principal Flute of the Houston Symphony and Adjunct Flute Professor at Houston Christian University. He is also a founding member of the Monarch Chamber Players, a Houston-based nonprofit chamber ensemble that has presented over 300 performances since its founding in 2020.

He has performed extensively with The Philadelphia Orchestra, including appearances with Yannick Nézet‑Séguin at Carnegie Hall, Bravo! Vail, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, as well as on tour in China with Marin Alsop. He held the position of Acting Principal Flute with the San Antonio Philharmonic for two seasons with Jeffrey Kahane. As a guest artist, he has appeared in principal, second, or auxiliary roles with the Baltimore Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic, and Hawaii Symphony, as well as the orchestras of Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera.

As a soloist, DeVries has performed Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D Major, and Ibert’s Flute Concerto. He can be heard on recordings of Béla Fleck’s “Louisiana” Concerto and Daniel Knagg’s Swallow’s Wings, and his performances have been broadcast on NPR and BBC Radio 3.

An active chamber musician, DeVries has collaborated with the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra in Los Angeles and with Houston-based ensembles including DACAMERA, Musiqa, Aperio, and Loop38. He performs regularly with the Monarch Chamber Players.

A dedicated educator, DeVries teaches at both the collegiate and pre-professional levels. In addition to his work at Houston Christian University, he maintains a private studio of advanced students in the Houston area and serves as a coach with the Houston Youth Symphony. He has presented masterclasses and workshops throughout Texas, is a faculty member for Floot Fire, and previously served as Program Chair for the Houston Flute Club.

A native of Los Angeles, DeVries studied at The Juilliard School and Rice University with Jeffrey Khaner and Leone Buyse. He is also a Yamaha Performing Artist.

Outside of music, he is equally committed to fitness and can often be found in the gym, convinced one more set will fix everything.
