ABOUT

Emilio Castillo, co-founder and bandleader of Tower of Power, has spent decades at the heart of one of the most iconic horn-driven soul and funk bands in music history. Born in Detroit to Mexican and Greek parents, Castillo moved to Fremont, CA at age 11. It was in California that his passion for soul music ignited, inspired by artists like Rodger Collins, the Spyders, and the electrifying performances of Sly & the Family Stone.

In 1967, Castillo formed a band called The Motowns, which evolved into Tower of Power the following year. A pivotal moment came when Stephen “Doc” Kupka auditioned for the group, bringing his signature baritone saxophone sound and a push toward original songwriting. Together, they penned You’re Still a Young Man, marking the beginning of a prolific creative partnership.

Tower of Power’s big break came when legendary promoter Bill Graham signed them to his San Francisco label after a standout audition at the Fillmore West. Their debut album, East Bay Grease, was released in 1971, and the band soon opened for Aretha Franklin during her historic Live at Fillmore West recording. Throughout the 1970s, Tower of Power released a string of influential albums on Warner Brothers, including Bump City, Back to Oakland, and Urban Renewal, featuring hits like So Very Hard to Go, What Is Hip?, and Don’t Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream).

Despite their success, the band faced challenges in the 1980s, including personal struggles and shifting musical trends. With support from fans like Huey Lewis, Tower of Power found renewed momentum, becoming regulars on The David Letterman Show and signing with Epic Records in 1990. Their resurgence led to six new albums and a rebranding from “dinosaurs” to “legends.”

Castillo’s pride in the band’s legacy is matched by his gratitude for the fans and fellow musicians who have supported them. Collaborations with artists such as Huey Lewis, Little Feat, and the Eurythmics remain career highlights. He continues to dream big, hoping to write a Tower of Power song that becomes the theme of a classic film and to record with an artist of timeless stature.

When not touring, Castillo is devoted to his family and faith. He spends his time at home with his wife Suzanne and their children Christian, Isabella, and Dominic, as well as his older daughters Ariana and Katina. The family is active in their local church, and Castillo cherishes the love and fellowship they share.

Through decades of musical evolution, Emilio Castillo remains grounded in gratitude, driven by purpose, and inspired by the enduring power of soul and funk. As he puts it, “You just can’t fake the funk” – and Tower of Power continues to prove it, night after night.
