Federico Montes, a Colombian-born trumpet player, has established himself as a dynamic performer and educator with an international career spanning orchestral, solo, and chamber music. He began his formal studies at the University of South Florida, earning his undergraduate degree before continuing to The Juilliard School, where he completed a master’s degree in trumpet performance. Federico later earned a doctoral degree in trumpet performance with an emphasis on music business from the University of Miami, further enriching his artistry through studies in Paris with world-renowned trumpet virtuoso Eric Aubier.
A past winner of the National Trumpet Competition of the United States and second prize winner of the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition, Federico has enjoyed an active performance career. He has toured with the American Brass Quintet and served as Principal Trumpet of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California. His orchestral experience includes positions as Second Trumpet with the Miami City Ballet and Assistant Principal Trumpet with The Florida Orchestra. He has also performed as a guest musician with leading ensembles such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony and the Naples Philharmonic.
In 2022, Federico joined the Omaha Symphony, where he holds a tenured position as Associate Principal Trumpet. His artistry and versatility have earned him recognition as both a featured soloist and an in-demand collaborator, with performances across North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
Beyond his performance career, Federico is deeply committed to music education, regularly giving masterclasses and clinics at universities and festivals. His teaching reflects his belief in combining technical mastery with entrepreneurial skills, empowering young musicians to thrive in today’s diverse musical landscape.
