Jeff Lorber is a Grammy‑winning keyboardist, composer, and producer who’s been shaping the sound of contemporary jazz for more than four decades. With 24 albums and a signature mix of funk, R&B, rock, and jazz, he’s one of the key architects of the groove‑driven style that grew into today’s smooth and urban jazz scenes.
Jeff first hit the national stage in the late 1970s with his band Jeff Lorber Fusion, known for its blend of rich harmonies and infectious rhythms. Their albums became fan favorites—featuring future legends like Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, and a young sax player named Kenny G.
While people often connect Jeff with “smooth jazz,” he’s quick to say his music goes deeper—melodic, funky, and full of improvisation. Over the years, his work has earned #1 radio hits, a loyal fan base, and a respected place in the contemporary jazz landscape. He also performs as part of the all‑star trio Jazz Funk Soul.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Cheltenham, Jeff started playing piano at four and gigged with local R&B bands as a teen. His time at Berklee College of Music helped shape his sound and connected him with future stars like John Scofield and Greg Hawkes. He also trained under renowned piano teacher Madame Margaret Chaloff.
After early fusion success, Jeff spent several years as an in‑demand session musician and producer, working with major pop and R&B artists including DeBarge, U2, and Paula Abdul. Jeff rebooted his solo career in the ’90s and went on to release a steady stream of albums throughout the 2000s and 2010s. His partnership with bassist‑producer Jimmy Haslip led to a creative resurgence, culminating in the 2017 Grammy win for Prototype. In 2019, Jeff teamed up with guitar legend Mike Stern for Eleven, a high‑energy blend of jazz, funk, and rock that showcases both musicians at their best.
Today, Jeff Lorber continues to push boundaries and evolve his sound—still driven by the same love of groove, melody, and improvisation that launched his career.
