ABOUT

Joachim Becerra Thomsen is the principal flute of the Royal Danish Orchestra of the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. He was formerly the principal flute of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the associate principal flute of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

He has played extensively as a guest principal throughout Scandinavia and Europe with ensembles such as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Danish Chamber Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Opera, and in the UK with the Philharmonia Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Further, he has played at the Verbier Festival and with the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

His talent has been recognized with numerous accolades, prizes, and honorary scholarships in Denmark, including the Aennchen and Eigil Harby’s Foundation’s Grant, Sonning Talent Prize, the Jacob Gade Grant and Talent Prize, and the Rødovre Music Award. In the calendar year 2026, he is the Danish National Radio’s Artist of the Year.

Critics have described his performances as “the highlight of the evening” with “outstanding ability and artistry” and “coursing with vitality” (Culture Spot LA). The Los Angeles Times further characterized his playing as “eloquent” and “haunting”.

Joachim completed his master’s degree in 2018 from the Royal Danish Academy of Music with an additional specialization in early music. In 2018, he also graduated from the Artist Diploma Program at the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles.

A dedicated chamber musician, Joachim participates in chamber music festivals throughout Denmark and Scandinavia annually. He is one of the artistic directors of the international chamber music and dance festival in Copenhagen, Equinox Festival, which promotes the works of underrepresented and forgotten composers.

Joachim plays on a Yamaha 18k gold flute and a Yamaha grenadilla wood flute.
