Dr. Matt Stratton is a conductor, educator, and brass musician committed to building musical culture where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow. His work centers on developing strong ensemble rapport, inclusive pedagogy, artistic development, and opportunities that help young musicians discover their potential both on and off the stage.
Stratton serves as Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and gives leadership to the Tuba and Euphonium studio at Olivet Nazarene University. At Olivet, he is grateful to work with students and colleagues who have helped the program grow in size, quality, and reach. Under his leadership, the Tiger Marching Band has consistently fielded 150–200 members and has shared its music internationally in London and Rome, as well as at national events including a Presidential Inaugural Parade. As a tubist and member of the faculty brass quintet, he maintains an active performance schedule giving regular solo recitals, clinics, masterclasses, and guest performances, throughout the Chicagoland region and abroad.
Outside the University, Stratton contributes to the broader marching arts community through his affiliations with Yamaha, Ultimate Drill Book, Music for All, DCI, and WGI. He currently serves as the Brass Caption Supervisor for The Cavaliers, supporting world-class performers and collaborating with a team of experienced educators and designers. His previous work with the Cadets and Bluecoats, including co-authoring The Blue Way Brass Program pedagogy, has influenced the marching arts approach to ensemble development and brass pedagogy today. He has also performed, taught, adjudicated, consulted, and conducted internationally, with work in Indonesia, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, the United Kingdom, and throughout the United States.
Above all, Doc Stratton believes in the power of music to build community, shape character, and create impactful shared experiences. He is grateful for the students, mentors, and colleagues who continue to inspire his work every day.
