ABOUT

Matt Weyer is the founder of Contemporary Percussion Concepts, a consulting and educational activity specializing in private lessons, clinics, music arranging, group instruction, and program consulting. In addition to this freelance work, Matt directs the percussion studio at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee, with responsibilities including private studio instruction, directing the percussion ensemble, assisting with the Carson-Newman marching band, and teaching the percussion methods course for music education majors.

From 2005 – 2008, Matt served as the percussion director at Plano West Senior High School in Plano, Texas, a position which involved teaching and supervision of percussion at six schools. Matt’s duties in Plano included directing multiple percussion ensembles, leading the steel band, directing and arranging for the multiple drumlines, and teaching 40 – 50 private lessons per week.

Matt has also held the positions of assistant band director/percussion director at Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee, and at Gatesville High School in central Texas. Matt holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Music in Music Performance from the University of Georgia, where he taught and arranged music for the Redcoat Marching Band while serving as a graduate assistant to the school of music.

Matt has served two terms on the education committee of the Percussive Arts Society, helping to edit and produce the Educators’ Companion publication, as well as a series of PAS Classroom videos. Matt has performed and been chosen for a panel discussion at PASIC, evaluated PAS scholarship applications, and assisted in choosing artists and sessions for PASIC while serving the committee.

Maintaining a consistent clinic schedule, Matt has led sessions at the Tennessee Day of Percussion, the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra All-East convention, as well as at numerous colleges and high schools in the Southeast.

As a composer and arranger, Matt has several published musical works available from Tapspace Productions, including Spinning Yarns, a collection of marimba solos, and Motor On, a book of vibraphone solos. Matt also serves on the team of percussion arrangers creating music for the EA College Football video game brand, and has been involved with studio production in connection with this product.

Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, Matt is a proud alumnus of the 1999 Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps of Toledo, Ohio, and has judged marching percussion throughout the Southeast, Louisiana, and Texas.

When not playing or teaching music, Matt serves in multiple roles at Powell United Methodist Church, Amachi Mentoring, and Men of Valor Prison Ministry in Knoxville, Tennessee. Matt lives in Powell, Tennessee with his wife, Missi and daughter, Emmaline.
