Orrin Evans

ABOUT

A prolific recording artist and visionary bandleader, Orrin Evans has consistently fused tradition with innovation. His live album Magic of Now captures this energy with a powerhouse quartet featuring bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Bill Stewart, and alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins. Though playing together for the first time, the group displays a cohesion and creative spark often found only in longtime ensembles—guided by Evans’ dynamic presence at the piano.

Across numerous acclaimed releases for Smoke Sessions, his own Imani Records, and earlier recordings for Criss Cross, Palmetto, and Posi-Tone, Evans showcases deep fluency in jazz traditions while fearlessly expanding their boundaries. He navigates the blues-infused grit of hard bop, the freedom of avant-garde expression, and the elegance of European classical forms—all with a singular voice and deeply rhythmic sensibility. Whether channeling lyrical introspection or fiery percussiveness, his sound is unmistakable.

Evans’ music reflects the influence of his Philadelphia roots and his formative years performing the genre-defying works of Charles Mingus. His compositions embrace “structured freedom”—an approach that invites each musician to explore boldly within a framework that values both individuality and cohesion.

This philosophy is especially evident in the Captain Black Big Band, Evans’ large ensemble known for its communal spirit and fearless creativity. The group’s recordings have earned critical acclaim and multiple GRAMMY nominations for their expressive range and bold arrangements.

Evans is also one half of the Eubanks Evans Experience, a duo with celebrated guitarist Kevin Eubanks. Together, they explore repertoire that spans generations and genres, showcasing their mutual versatility and deep improvisational rapport.

His wide-ranging projects also include Terreno Comum, a Brazilian-inspired ensemble, and his core piano trio featuring longtime collaborators Luques Curtis and Mark Whitfield, Jr.—who also perform with trumpeter Sean Jones. In the collective Tar Baby, formed with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits, Evans continues to stretch harmonic and rhythmic conventions alongside like-minded explorers. The group often features guest artists and regularly revisits and reimagines the jazz canon.

Imani Records, founded by Evans and his wife Dawn, serves as a home for projects that defy easy categorization. Initially launched as a vehicle for Evans’ own music, the label has since evolved into a platform for emerging voices and creative risk-takers alike.

Evans draws inspiration from his parents—his father, a self-producing playwright and educator, and his mother, an opera singer who staged her own concerts. Their example of artistic self-determination informs his approach not only to music, but to community building and creative curation. He has spearheaded performance series in Philadelphia and New York, connecting audiences with a cross-section of rising and established artists. During periods of widespread shutdowns, Evans created Club Patio, a front-porch concert series that brought world-class musicians to his Philadelphia neighborhood and livestreamed the results for global audiences.

He sees the artists he collaborates with as part of an extended family. “I like to connect the dots,” he says. “Bring people together and see what happens from that mix.” That spirit of collaboration and exploration is the thread that runs through every one of his projects.

Evans’ musical foundation was forged in Philadelphia’s jam session scene, where he learned from masters like Shirley Scott, Trudy Pitts, Mickey Roker, and Charles Fambrough. Early on, he earned his stripes working with Bobby Watson, Branford Marsalis, and Ralph Peterson—all of whom helped shape his fearless approach to bandleading.

In addition to performing and recording, Evans is a dedicated educator. He has curated jazz curricula in public schools, taught at private institutions and summer camps, and mentored countless rising musicians. Many of his former students have gone on to make waves in the jazz world, further extending his impact.
