In a world of targeted music and sanitized sound – songwriter, producer and current Tower of Power (TOP) keyboardist Roger Smith continues to crash through categories with his unique musical talent, as illustrated by the many varied musical projects of which he’s been involved over his long career.
Roger’s diverse scattering of musical interests include recording and/or performing with Country artist Jerry Jeff Walker, guitar greats Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck, Gladys Knight, Club Nouveau, Ronnie Foster, Gerald Albright, Peter White, The Dave Matthews Band, and with his bandmates in Tower of Power, Roger recorded with musical phenom, Jacob Collier.
Extensive world-wide touring with TOP over the past 20 years is the backdrop of Roger’s career, yet he’s enjoyed great success as a solo artist at the same time. Most notably, his song Off The Hook, which stayed on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart for 4 weeks.
With 10 solo albums to his credit, his latest solo effort, Just Another Day, provides us with a welcome embrace of eclectic musical styles. From R&B ballads Just Another Day, to up-tempo funk infusions Party Up, Second Wind, to Motown inspired There is No Love, South Side of Heavy, Roger again demonstrates his love of the groove with this collection of inspired creations.
