Tom Hicks, a pianist originally from Guernsey in the British Isles, is widely recognized for his distinguished artistry, expressive depth, and commanding technique. Praised for his “magnificent pianism” (International Piano) and “gorgeously creative playing” (Fanfare), he brings a unique blend of technical precision and interpretive insight to the concert stage. Hicks maintains an active career as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician, performing in major venues throughout Europe and the U.S., including London’s Wigmore Hall and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.
Hicks has performed as a concerto soloist more than 60 times, with particular focus on Rachmaninoff’s complete works for piano and orchestra and both Brahms concerti. He has earned acclaim for his interpretations of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann, noted for their “depth and maturity” as well as “bravura passages executed with aplomb.”
His discography reflects his broad repertoire. In 2019, Hicks released a recording of music by John Ireland and Tchaikovsky, supported by the John Ireland Charitable Trust, which received praise from International Piano, Fanfare, and Piano Journal. In 2022, he released two albums: Liszt and Ireland Piano Sonatas (Divine Art) and Blue Sounds (Métier). The former, which also includes works by Stanford, Coleridge-Taylor, and Rebecca Clarke, was lauded for its “consistent excellence” and included in American Record Guide’s Best of 2022 Critics’ Choice. The latter showcases premiere recordings of works by Camden Reeves, with Hicks’ playing commended for its “fluidity, authority, and musicality” (Textura). He also appears on a Grammy-nominated recording of Augusta Read Thomas’ music released by Nimbus Records.
His 2025 release on Divine Art, Chopin: The Complete Nocturnes, has been celebrated for its refined and authentic interpretations. Fanfare praised his sensitivity and voice-leading, calling the performances some of the finest available.
In addition to his solo work, Hicks is an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed piano quintets by Schumann, Brahms, and Dvořák with the Coull Quartet and collaborated with pianist Eylam Keshet on Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring for two pianos. His chamber training includes mentorship from Boris Berman, Hung-Kuan Chen, Leonard Elschenbroich, Mark Steinberg, and Ralph Kirshbaum.
Hicks began his training with Mervyn Grand in Guernsey and later studied with Murray McLachlan at Chetham’s School of Music, continuing with him at the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester. He received several awards during this time, including the RNCM Gold Medal, the Peter Frankl Piano Prize, and the University of Manchester’s Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. He completed his graduate studies in the U.S., earning a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music under James Giles, and studying with Boris Berman at the Yale School of Music. His studies were supported by multiple scholarships and fellowships at both institutions. Hicks has won gold medals at the Wales International Piano Competition, EPTA UK Piano Competition, and Croydon Concerto Competition. In 2019, he founded the Fanny Davies International Piano Series in Guernsey, where he serves as Artistic Director. The series brings internationally renowned pianists—such as Joanna MacGregor, Leon McCawley, Noriko Ogawa, and Alexander Panfilov—to Guernsey for concerts and masterclasses.
An experienced educator, Hicks has taught at Yale University, Northwestern University, and Whitman College. He is currently Assistant Professor of Piano, Director of the Piano Area, and Artistic Director of the International Piano Series at the College of Charleston.
