Julie DeRoche, professor emerita, served as Professor of Clarinet, Performance Department Chair, and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at DePaul University from 1984 until her retirement in 2024. A student of Robert Marcellus and Clark Brody, she received her degree in clarinet performance in 1981 and remained in Chicago, developing a significant career as a clarinetist and educator. Ms. DeRoche is an admired pedagogue and has been frequently engaged to teach and give masterclasses at clarinet events throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Ms. DeRoche performed regularly with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and can be heard on a number of its recordings. She toured with the CSO in Europe, South America, Asia, and the U.S and has performed with that organization at the Ravinia Festival. In addition, she has performed with numerous chamber ensembles in Chicago and has recorded hundreds of radio and TV commercials. Ms. DeRoche has been actively involved with the International Clarinet Association, serving as conference director, treasurer. As the first female president of the ICA, and she was awarded the ICA’s Honorary Membership in 2025.
